The Fairtrade Foundation FIVE GOALS
We have to meet FIVE GOALS to confidently make an application to the Fairtrade Foundation for Fairtrade Community Status on behalf of Calne Town & Parish Communities. These goals are about assessing and encouraging the growth of the level of Fairtrade activity and product sales and consumption within the community. The level required to meet the required standard is based on our population. We are operating within the Fairtrade Foundation 20,000-25,000 range, where we sit around the middle of this, taken from the 2011 Census.
We have already noted that there is a greater than expected level of Fairtrade activity in our community area. This is very encouraging!
On this page we will keep you up to date on progress towards meeting the FIVE GOALS:

GOAL 2 |
Fairtrade product ranges are readily available in the area’s shops and retail outlets.
At least FOUR Fairtrade products are readily available in FIVE of the area's retail outlets (shops, supermarkets, newsagents, petrol stations). At least TWO products served in THREE local catering outlets (cafes, restaurants, pubs). Our population target for retailers is 5 and for catering establishments its 3, so quite a low bar which we intend to help raise. |
Progress
|
Jul2017: We have added a list of targets to our database for this goal. We will start working on this goal from September. We are already part way there in meeting this goal but will need to audit and verify the level of Fairtrade activity. Based on what we know about current retail activity we expect to get off to a running start.
Sep2017: Audits will start after our meeting on Friday 8th Sept. Nov2017: Audits for Goal 2 have started (belated) and are well under way. |
GOAL 3 |
Fairtrade products are used by an appropriate number of local workplaces. Workplaces in this context includes a wide range of organisations, including: Offices, shops, B&Bs, Hotels (residents only), community organisations, faith communities and places of education (e.g. Schools).
Our population target for churches is 50%. There is no set target for schools but we will aim to help schools raise their level of Fairtrade activity to demonstrate a serious effort to raise the bar. We won't know what we have to do to help the other categories until we start to audit. |
Progress
|
We have built a list of targets to help us fulfill this goal and have approached some of them. Two churches have confirmed/recommitted to supporting Fairtrade as Fairtrade Churches. We have just started to talk to schools (John Bentley), much more of which will happen when the new term begins. We have discovered at least two businesses in this category who already comply. More specifics as soon as we have agreed publicity with them.
Sep2017: Audits will start after our meeting on Friday 8th Sept. Nov2017: Audits for Goal 3 have started (belated) and are well under way. Dec2017: All Primary & Secondary Schools written to about the project. Dec2017: Calne Coop Food Store offers to host an art exhibition during Fairtrade Fortnight for school Fairtrade art work. |
GOAL 4
|
Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign. This means that we need to raise the profile of Fairtrade in the various media as we progress with our targets to meet the five goals.
|
Progress
|
Our campaign has been announced in the local press, and Community Matters. We now have to keep the visibility up as we announce progress on goals.
Sep2017: We are archiving media coverage and promotional meetings as they occur. Sep2017: Received financial support from Calne Area Board to begin advertising campaign. Nov2017: Started on Campaign banners & advertising sticker designs. Dec2017: Article sent to Bremhill Parish Magazine. Jan2018: We are now monitoring our Website statistics to see what online public interest growth there is for local Fairtrade. January Articles sent to Town Cryer, Town Guide and Inspire (Derry Hill) publications. |
GOAL 5
|
A local Steering Group is convened to ensure progress and continued commitment to the campaign. This should ideally include a council representative, campaigners (that's us), and people representing the area’s schools, churches and businesses. The group is responsible for an annual assessment to monitor whether the area is continuing to meet the five goals. The group organises special events for Fairtrade Fortnight in February/March each year.

Progress
|
We have succeeded in adding four more members to our Steering Committee including two Town Councillors. This means we are well on our way to constituting a sound group to lead the campaign (see About Us for details). We have had SEVEN significant campaign planning meetings since January.
Sep2017: We have church and council reps. We have asked for an additional Parish Council rep. We will be approaching schools over Sept/Oct to look for reps. We start planning for FT fortnight on Friday 8th Sept. Sep2017: Booked the Corn Exchange for Saturday 3rd March 2018 to mount a Calne Town FTF Event. |
